Electrolux introduces its Vac from the Sea initiative: vacuum cleaners constructed with pieces of ocean debris. Each of the five vacuum cleaners pictured above represents the ocean or sea where the plastics originated. They are fully functional, and built with the same core as the Ultra One Green-model vacuum cleaners.
This Swedish company has scavenged from five different bodies of water to make a striking statement about waste. Our oceans are full of plastic (such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch), yet on land there is a shortage of recycled plastic. According to Electrolux, it’s difficult for them to find enough recycled plastic to produce their Green Range line of cleaners. Currently the Green Range consists of about 70 percent recycled plastic, but Electrolux would like to reach 100%.
As it’s difficult to source this trash, Electrolux won’t be making these models available for mass production and purchase. These Vacs from the Sea will be going on tour sometime soon, then they may be auctioned off with the proceeds going to pollution research. In the meantime, Electrolux says:
Every act is one of plastic karma – whether it is supporting initiatives dealing with marine plastics or spreading the word about the issue.
Take action by cleaning up a our beaches and making sure plastic gets recycled before it ends up polluting our waters.
