A true eBook tells the story of Mr. Morris Lessmore and his love for books.

“The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” is a children’s story, an interactive iPad app, and an immersive animated movie all at once.

The graphics are visually stunning and the interactive features are subtle invitations for exploration. Created by author William Joyce, a designer who worked on two of Pixar’s early hits (Toy Story and A Bug’s Life), an accomplished illustrator and animator who’s published New Yorker covers, and has worked on many other animated classics. Joyce collaborated with Moonbot Studios to create this delightfuly interactive book-app.

The story is inspired by the animated short film of the same name, a tale of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor. Interestingly, this very interactive digital experience is an adoration to traditional books.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore App, which debuted in iTunes on May 31st for $4.99, has worked its way up the charts. The app was No. 9 last week and is currently the Top Grossing iPad app in the books category.

This really raises the bar for bedtime stories. I’m very curious to see what children’s literature will look like in the coming decade.
