There is just no better feeling than seeing someone you don’t know reading your book in a public place, she said. And so I just decided I would just make it happen for myself. . .

In an entrepreneurial spirit, Jennifer Belle took this dream one step further. Everyone reading her book in public would also be laughing hysterically, truly enjoying themselves. She received over 400 resumes, auctioned 100, and hired 40 actresses to read her book all over Manhattan. This is guerrilla marketing at its best. People took notice of the infectious laughing billboards. And asked the winning question What are you reading? A clever publicity campaign that encourages the public to laugh out loud and to start talking to one other.

The Whitney Museum of American Art in NY has their Biennial exhibition, 2010, running through May 30th. The art is typically by young and lesser known artists, often setting or leading trends in contemporary art. I loved the variety and abundance of physical dimension. Kate Gillmore paired sculpture and video incredibly well with Still Standing Here, an emphasize on our struggle with self-constructed obstacles. Artist David Adamo tells us a story of time and utility with an axe, an arrow, a knife, scissors, and whittled canes. Scott Short reinvents traditional painterly practice. Perhaps my favorite was Strange Attractions an installation by Aki Sasamote that explores the nuances and peculiarities of everyday life. Aki also creates improvisational performances that take place within the installation on May 9th, 16th, 26th, and 29th at 4pm. On May 26–28th the museum will be open for 24-hours to allow more people access at all hours of the day.

Perhaps Jerry Saltz said it best:
“I left the museum with a giant burst of happiness for the infinite creativity of America.” —New York Magazine

We had an awesome time in NYC. The blog will be filled with our experiences for weeks to come. One lucky surprise was stumbling upon the Mapping New York’s Shoreline exhibit at the big, old, beautiful, NY Public Library. The library is worth a trip by itself, but this exhibit was the icing on the cake.

We have recently been reviewing and researching cartographers, which helped me appreciate this even more. The maps were graphically stunning and the evolution of style and precision over the years was fascinating. The exhibition itself was excellent. The blue and green walls with various cutouts made the space dimensional and interesting while complimenting the subject matter. Tip top notch. Go see it if you can, it closes on June 26, 2010.
