And those new sneakers he wants? Yeah, they’re at Marqsmen too. Commence operation Quirky Window Display. Look, ten thousand Facebook friends does not a thriving small business make. The retail jungle eats fashion boutiques for breakfast. OMG! . . . Suddenly, a common kitchen item is brought forward to strut its stuff before the unforgiving Gods of hip. In all its iconic glory, the homely yet dignified aluminum foil turned heads. Texts were sent, cards were maxed, and they all lived happily ever after.

When the economy took a nosedive in 2008, the Shoefly boutique pulled up its bootstraps and forged into the holiday season with renewed vigor and a revamped image. The Elevate the Spirit campaign offered subtle encouragement to shoppers with playful window displays in Seattle and Portland, matching Web enhancement, and print ads. Construction cranes signify a growing economy while flying shoes and Origami create a visual pun that crystallizes the indie ethos of this thriving shoe shop.

A picture in a magazine might tell you what to buy but it can’t tell you how to dress, dig? When Marqsmen debuts a new label, you can be sure that it’s right for the season and right for Seattle. Using signage highlighting local hot spots and rhymes coined by Seattle’s own Sir Mix-A-Lot, this window display proudly trumpets the return of every Seattleite’s favorite time of year. The graphics allude to brands that Marqsmen carries and reflect the energy of the city that takes the rain in stride but once it gets sunny, everyone is ready to play.

For a small business, expanding the target audience is no small task. When Marqsmen unveiled a selection of womens’ brands to customers only familiar with seeing men’s clothing on the racks, there needed to be a hook. The slogan “Fall in Line” referenced both the season and what women would soon be doing behind the store’s cash register. The launch of Marqsmen Femme also came with a new, eye-catching, window display that welcomed both the men and the women who shop for them.

That tie you got him last year is still in the box. That card with the frolicking puppies is long forgotten. Sadly, Father’s Day has become a festival of schmaltz—what a pathetic way to honor the man who taught you how to yell at athletes on television and kick the lawnmower until it works again. Marqsmen boutique knows that you can do better. With this outrageous and deliciously ironic Web campaign, a seed was planted in the minds of sons and daughters surfing for last-minute gifts: He deserves more than a new pair of Dockers. He deserves style, he deserves to turn heads, and he deserves a reminder that you’re his favorite.
